Good Advice from My Sister:
If You are Going to Write Science Fiction - Attend a Worldcon! by Michele Poague
I’ve been to many different conventions in my life but the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is the most exciting and informative convention I’ve ever attended. Chicon 7 was my sixth Worldcon. In 1994 I told my sister I was writing a science fiction story and, having been to other Worldcons, she signed us up for ConAdian in Winnipeg, Canada, insisting all serious sci-fi writers and fans attended this annual convention.
I was amazed by the sheer magnitude of information and entertainment provided by the hosting members. At ConAdian, 3,500 fans and writers shared their knowledge and experience through hundreds of workshops and coffee klatches. I was boggled by the choices of events from movie screenings to one-on-one writing advice. There were Regency dances, video gaming, and the Dealers' Room alone took an entire day to see.
There was so much to see and do in Canada that we attended Intersection, Glasgow, Scotland in 1995. I was learning the finer points of creating believable characters and how to kill them off all while having the time of my life. I took copious notes and made dozens of new friends. After the convention, my sister and I toured the UK, Ireland, France, and Germany visiting some of our new friends.
In 1996, friends from Germany and England joined us and 6,700 other members in Anaheim, California for L.A.con III. I attended many more courses on writing. Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age took best novel, and for Dramatic Presentation, Babylon 5’s The Coming of Shadows was that year’s big winner at the Hugo Awards. That close to Hollywood, you know the Masquerade was outstanding. The costuming alone was worth the price of admission.
This was getting to be a habit. We attended LoneStarCon 2 in San Antonio, Texas the following year, but my dip into politics was slowly absorbing all of my free time. Ten years would pass before I stumbled upon my writing notes and research and reawakened the desire to write that novel.
The publishing world was changing at a dramatic pace and I wanted to know what was happening in the world of writing. At the 2008: Denvention 3 in Denver, Colorado, I reacquainted myself with the dream and spent the next two years finishing The Healing Crystal, Book 1, Heir to Power, and Book 2, Fall of Eden.
This last year, I was struggling with book 3, Ransom, and knew the cure was in Chicago, Illinois at Chicon 7. With over 850 seminars, events and programs to choose from I knew the convention would rejuvenate my spirit. The all-night Suite Parties were great for meeting new friends and learning about the latest good books. I also learned, much to my delight, that I had retained many of the writing skills gained at those earlier conventions. Now my focus was more on publishing and marketing. Sessions on designing cover art and understanding social media replaced the courses on character building in the later days of the convention. The fabulous artwork in the Art Room helped me determine the cover styles I’ll be using for The Candy Store and Last Kiss.
Fans hold nothing back, if they like it they’ll tell you, if the don’t... well, they’ll tell you that, too. Exhausted, but happy, I come home to write once more. I believe Ransom will be a better book for having gone to Chicon 7.

Description of Book: Myths are but shadows of a greater truth.
What is the Healing Crystal and who is the rightful heir? Is it a religious object or a powerful weapon? Does it belong to a fallen line of kings or to the colonists of Survin? Should its fate be left in the hands of the young and inexperienced Kairma or to Narvin, the last descendent of a line of kings?
Kairma holds the Crystal and believes she will become the next leader of Survin, while her younger sister Kinter, believes she, not Kairma, is the rightful heir. Narvin believes the Healing Crystal is the Star of Genesis, a powerful relic his ancestors have been seeking for centuries.
Determined to possess the object that will return him to his glory, Narvin is unwavering in his quest to possess it, and Kairma is caught in a fierce race across barren deserts and rugged mountains to a shattering finish where the winner must decide the fate of the world.
